Rails To Trails

The Great Ohio Lake to River Greenway will include a 100-mile paved trail accessible to bicycle riders, pedestrians, horseback riders, joggers and snowmobilers.   It will initiate at a site on West Avenue where the former Pennsylvania Railroad line started and will run along that line through Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties, culminating at the Ohio River.  Some sections of the Lake to River Greenway, further south, already are complete, including 14 miles in Mahoning County and 10 miles in Columbiana County.    There are 13.7 miles in Trumbull County and 27 miles in Ashtabula County that are included in the Western Reserve Greenway.

A section from West Avenue North to Lake Erie is being developed by Ashtabula City and is known as the North Shore Trail.

A - The North Shore Trail begins at the Ohio Department of Transportation facility on West Avenue.

B - The Trail follows the abandoned Pennsylvania Railroad line Northward, crossing the railroad bridge over Center Street.

C - The trail exits the rail corridor at the old Bow Socket site, and follows Ann Avenue northward to West 32nd Street, then West to West Avenue.

D - The trail will cross the East-West railroad corridor via a cantilevered bridge off the east side of the overpass bridge.

E - Next, the trail follows along the East side of West Avenue, continuing North of the Lake Avenue Bridge across from Smith Field --another trail staging area with parking.

F - The trail picks up the abandoned Laird Lumber railroad spur along Strong Brook Creek.   At Laird Drive, the trail proceeds East, then North along Laird and Morton drives, ending at Bridge Street.

G - The trail takes the steps to Point Park, follows Walnut Boulevard West to the tennis courts across from Harbor High School.

H - The trail proceeds to Lake Erie at Walnut Beach Park, the Northern terminus of the Great Ohio Lake-to-River Greenway.

The first phase will include an 8-mile, 10-foot wide stretch of pavement from West Avenue to State Route 307 in Austinburg.  Also, part of the initial construction will be installation of pedestrian and bicycle signs, rehabilitation of two small bridges along the trail, installation of safety railing and fencing at the Mill Creek Bridge in Austinburg and installation of two solar-powered emergency 911 phones.
